Su acumulaci\u00f3n en la atm\u00f3sfera, que se ha disparado desde la primera revoluci\u00f3n industrial, es la causa del calentamiento global de acuerdo con la mayor\u00eda de los estudios. En principio, lo m\u00e1s sencillo ser\u00eda reducir las <strong>emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero<\/strong>, pero la econom\u00eda de los combustibles f\u00f3siles dificulta una transici\u00f3n acelerada hacia otro modelo energ\u00e9tico. Mientras las <strong>energ\u00edas renovables<\/strong> van adquiriendo mayor predicamento, han comenzado a desarrollarse numerosas propuestas para reducir su presencia en la atm\u00f3sfera. Desde algunas m\u00e1s viables como las plantas capturadoras de carbono hasta otras m\u00e1s inveros\u00edmiles como ionizar el CO2 de la estratosfera por medio de rayos l\u00e1ser para mandarlo al espacio exterior desde el \u00c1rtico. \u00bfPero qu\u00e9 tal si en lugar de guardarlo o lanzarlo hacia los cinturones de Van Allen encontr\u00e1semos una manera de convertirlo en otros materiales como el pl\u00e1stico?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"705\" height=\"705\" src=\"https:\/\/goldenti.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/imagen-27.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25833\" srcset=\"https:\/\/goldenti.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/imagen-27.png 705w, https:\/\/goldenti.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/imagen-27-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#c7960f\"><strong>Del CO2 al etileno\u2026 y el polietileno<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>La primera parada de este viaje nos lleva al a\u00f1o 2015, cuando un grupo de cient\u00edficos de la Universidad de Singapur desarroll\u00f3 un sistema de \u201cfotos\u00edntesis artificial\u201d que, utilizando el cobre como catalizador permit\u00eda <strong>generar etileno a partir de di\u00f3xido de carbono<\/strong> y agua, sirvi\u00e9ndose para ello de energ\u00eda solar. El a\u00f1o pasado presentaron el primer prototipo. La ciencia siempre es una carrera de relevos en la que es preciso contar con el conocimiento acumulado para dar el siguiente salto, que se dar\u00eda poco despu\u00e9s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahora volamos a la otra punta del mundo, a la Universidad de Toronto. All\u00ed, aprovechando las instalaciones del sincrotr\u00f3n Canadian Light Source, han desarrollado un sistema para determinar las condiciones \u00f3ptimas de la producci\u00f3n de etileno a trav\u00e9s de la cat\u00e1lisis con cobre. La ventaja de su tecnolog\u00eda, que se ha anunciado en un paper de la revista Nature, es que reduce la generaci\u00f3n de metano hasta niveles insignificantes y maximiza la producci\u00f3n de etileno. Una vez producida esta sustancia, se dispone ya de la base para crear uno de los pl\u00e1sticos m\u00e1s extendidos del mundo: el polietileno, cuya producci\u00f3n constituye, a su vez, una de las mayores fuentes de <strong>gases de efecto invernadero<\/strong>. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#cd9a0f\"><strong>Convertir el CO2 de las calderas de carb\u00f3n en bicarbonato de sodio<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hacer pasteles aprovechando el <strong>CO2<\/strong> producido en la combusti\u00f3n del carb\u00f3n es uno de los resultados de una novedosa tecnolog\u00eda de captura de carbono. La planta pionera en ese sentido se encuentra ubicada en Tuticoirn (India). Genera cero emisiones de C02 en la producci\u00f3n de bicarbonato de sodio, un gasificante habitual en reposter\u00eda, o carbonato de sodio, un elemento base para fabricar jabones, vidrio y tintes. El empresario indio, que de acuerdo con la noticia publicada en la BBC, no buscaba salvar el planeta, sino encontrar una fuente de CO2 barata y fiable, aprovech\u00f3 una tecnolog\u00eda dise\u00f1ada por Carbonclean Solutions, una startup brit\u00e1nica fundada por cient\u00edficos indios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para que la planta funcione, necesita vapor y C02. Ambos elementos se obtienen de la combusti\u00f3n del carb\u00f3n y, mientras el vapor generado se transporta a trav\u00e9s de una tuber\u00eda, el C02 y el humo se env\u00edan por otra conducci\u00f3n que va a parar a una chimenea donde un agente qu\u00edmico desarrollado por Carbonclean Solutions precipita el <strong>di\u00f3xido de carbono<\/strong> de manera m\u00e1s eficiente y barata que otros m\u00e9todos utilizados hasta la fecha. De hecho, no requiere subvenciones para garantizar su viabilidad. Ese CO2 se transforma posteriormente en carbonato o bicarbonato de sodio. Calculan que, en esta planta en concreto, se podr\u00e1n transformar 60.000 toneladas de CO2 al a\u00f1o, y que utilizando el mismo m\u00e9todo, ser\u00eda posible acabar con hasta el 10% de las <strong>emisiones de di\u00f3xido de carbono<\/strong> producidas por la combusti\u00f3n de carb\u00f3n en el mundo. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
